Rhea Dobos
Photography artist
"The subject of Rhea Dobos’s images is most often defined by the intersection of chance and spontaneity. The chosen natural or artificial object or situation forms the basis of the artwork. A distinctive feature of her photographs is an attraction to pure forms, structures, black-and-white compositions, and the depiction of people observed in unusual situations. The harmony of light and dark, as well as the interplay of light and shadow through various structures, planar, and spatial elements, complete the visual experience. In her cityscapes and interior shots—especially those taken in museums—she captures figures in moments of wonder, as well illustrated by her Viewpoints series.

Traditionally, photography presents two approaches: the “classical” approach aims to document the visual scene, primarily engaging with questions of what is there, what it looks like, and what exactly the object, building, or subject being depicted is. Alongside this—though lacking a better term, we might call it a static perspective—there exists an equally old alternative approach that raises the question of what has happened or what will happen in the situation portrayed in the image. The former finds its natural medium in traditional painting, while, somewhat paradoxically, the latter is more akin to the world of literature and storytelling. D.R.’s works are open to both directions and often attempt to merge the two. The former is primarily represented by her still lifes, object, and architectural photography, while the latter is well exemplified by her continuously expanding „Viewpoints” series, where the suggestion of an underlying story holds equal weight alongside static representation."
